A formal characterization of maintenance goals

The notion of maintenance often appears in the AI literature in the context of agent behavior and planning. In this paper we argue that earlier characterizations of the notion of maintenance is not intuitive to characterize the maintenance behavior of certain agents. We propose a diierent characterization of maintenance and distinguish it from earlier notions such as stabilizability and the temporal speci-cation 23f. We present a simple algorithm to test maintainability and another algorithm that constructs a maintainble control. Noticing the incomparability of our notion of maintenance and the notion of stabilizability, we propose the notion of (k,l)-maintainability that generalizes both.
